SYNCAR

Synchronized Automated Driving in Urban Areas

Introduction and Objectives

Safety, driving comfort and energy consumption have gained primary importance within the research and development of highly automated driving. One of SYNCAR’s objective is to broaden these perspectives. Therefore, innovative solutions for anticipatory driving will be developed, taking other road users and light signal systems into account. This results in a novel approach on traffic optimization by providing specific driving recommendations (maneuver recommendations) for vehicles or vehicle types. To achieve this, new methods for the processing of environmental information from vehicle sensors need to be developed. In a next step, this information can be used for operation and visualization in the vehicle as well as to provide them on infrastructural side. The new methods and features will be prototypically implemented and demonstrated – also in real traffic.

Contribution by the Fraunhofer IVI

The Fraunhofer IVI develops new processes for influencing highly-automated driving vehicles by means of precise recommendations towards speed, distance behavior, choice of lanes as well as for bulk driving within the progressive signal system (»green wave«). As a basis, the Fraunhofer IVI realizes for instance infrastructural data processing and analysis in a dynamic object model to combine traffic-related objects on a road section. The institute also contributes to the on-board visualization of maneuver recommendations and other functions using a specific prototypical interface (maneuver-screen), and participates in the transmission specifications to vehicles. Based on simulations, the Fraunhofer IVI will furthermore estimate the impact potential of the developed methods and functions on the whole transport system.
